Suction Rolls for Paper Mills

Suction Roll Manufacturing

Our suction rolls are designed to meet your unique application. We have been manufacturing suction rolls for over 50 years for the paper industry. Throughout R-V’s history, including the acquisition of LG Industries, we have designed and manufactured nearly 300 suction rolls and overhauled hundreds of suction rolls for paper producing mills across the world. R-V manufactured rolls for all positions, which include couch, drum, pick-up, pressure, and press section rolls. No matter its classification, each suction roll has proven and reliable features to guarantee its operation.

Suction Roll Mechanical Features

Each part of the roll is designed to maintain efficiency through specific criteria. Some of the innovative features of each of these parts are listed below:

  • Bearings: Spherical roller bearings are mounted on tapered seats with hydraulic removal provisions. The bearings are designed to meet L-10 (120,000 hours) lifespan through the applicable loads and speeds.
  • Deckles Adjustments: Our standard deckles are opposing screw type mechanical adjustments.
  • Efficient Air Flows: All of our suction rolls are designed to achieve the proper air flow efficiency from the shell through the suction box and out the suction elbow.
  • Internal Bearings: We offer an internal bearing design that utilizes an inner ring rotation spherical roller bearing. The bearing is mounted on a tapered seat journal for easy installation and removal.
  • Internal Suction Box Seals: The seal between the suction box and the shell inside diameter is accomplished with rubber graphite seal strips (plain and silencer), end deckles with custom stainless steel loading springs, and air tube loading assemblies.
  • Showers: All rolls come standard with a seal strip lubrication shower and a cleaning shower.
  • Split Front Housing: Both models offer a split front housing that enables the bearings and vacuum connection to be accessed easily.
  • Suction Box Material: Our suction rolls are provided with stainless steel suction boxes unless a carbon steel painted box is preferred.

Suction Roll Design Standards

All of our suction rolls are designed to be efficient and heavy duty. We offer a wide range of suction roll dimensions with the following options:

  • Air Flow: CFM / sq. inch based on TAPPI standards.
  • Air Velocity: Our suction rolls are designed to keep air flow velocities in a normal operating range.
  • Bearing Life: 120,000 L-10 Hours at design loads and speeds.
  • Deflection: We design our suction roll shells so they do not exceed a maximum allowable deflection. This ensures that the rolls will function properly in the positions they would be used.
  • Drilling Patterns: Standard “silent” type drill patterns to meet application and strength requirements.
  • Shell Materials: We offer three options for shell materials such as Bronze, CA-15 S/S, and Alloy S/S.
  • Stress: The critical components are engineered on every roll to ensure our allowable stress values are not exceeded. These major components include Shell, Heads, Suction Box, and Bearing Housings.

Suction Roll Model Options

We offer two suction roll models with the features listed above, as well as any additional specifications requested by our customers.  The two model options are based on a three-bearing design.

suction roll series 90 model
suction roll series 60 model

Series 60 Model: The front end of the roll is split and features separate vacuum and bearing mountings.

Series 90 Model: The front end of the roll is split and features separate vacuum discharge mounting. The front bearing is mounted internally of the shell.

Please contact us if you would like more information on any of our suction roll features. We welcome new opportunities to innovate solutions for customers’ needs.

Suction Roll Overhauls

Suction Roll Overhauls

The R-V Suction Roll Overhaul Program follows a step-by-step overhaul procedure to bring your Suction Roll back to peak optimization and performance levels. With our extensive history in the paper mill machinery industry, R-V is capable of overhauling all manufacturer’s suction rolls. An R-V complete Inspection consists of:

  • Two station head fit inspections.
  • Vacuum seal optimization
  • Computer generated inspection reports, supplied via email with digital photos
  • Complete dye-check for cracks on shell, head, and housing components
  • Four point quality control check list
  • Electronic grinding profile sheets
  • Electronic dynamic balancing report if required

Our Suction Roll Overhaul Process incorporates all facets of the overhaul. This not only includes the actual inspection, but full logistical and assembly services. The full service program includes:

  • Trucking R-V trucks provide round-trip logistical service.
  • Disassembly and Inspection Once the roll has been disassembled, inspectors mic and record critical sizes on all components.
  • Recommendations Our engineering department reviews the inspection report and prepares a list of recommendations. Customers are welcomed to review the list of recommendations and inspect the roll at our facility. Our sales department then submits an itemized quotation for the requested repairs that is incorporated into the report.
  • Repairs Upon customer approval, engineering prepares drawings for your specific suction roll and manufacturing completes the repairs.
  • Assembly and Quality Control The roll is reassembled with newly manufactured parts. Quality is ensured through detailed inspections by our in-house quality team throughout the reassembly process.
